Earth Globe - Explore the World
The earth is not actually round, it's slightly egg shaped, yet there seems to not be a single egg shaped earth globe on the market. You see, the weight of the earth makes it sag a little bit at the bottom, making it larger around the backside than it is at the top. A lot of people can relate to that type of thing.
Until they decide to create an oblong earth globe, we will have to settle for the round one we are used to. At least it's a step up from the whole 'earth is flat' campaign of a few centuries back.
If you have an earth globe in your home, take a look at it. It well may need updating for another reason. If you have a globe your grandfather gave you or one that's from high school it's about time to swap it out. Nothing is the way it used to be. Country names and borders seem to change with the tides. If you look closely, you may see some of the things listed on that old globe which no longer exist. If you have had it an extremely long time you may be amazed at the high number of things that have changed. Here's a hint. If your earth globe still says USSR, time to replace it before teaching your kids geography. You're missing quite a few countries over that way like Georgia, Kazikstan, and probably a number of other changes that have taken place in recent decades.
When you are getting that new earth globe, you don't have to stick with the old school model. There are quite a few newer options. If you want a close up look, some earth globes have countries and states on them as well as provinces. Some are topographical and some are have well defined geographical features and are three-dimensional so you can feel the differences from mountain to valley.
Want to really show the kids how the earth works? Get one on an axis so you can shine a flashlight to show how the seasonal changes, and the sun, affect their lives. In addition to being an attractive addition to the house, you can also remember that an earth globe can be a teaching tool.
If you want a little more fun in a globe, get one that is a bar. Pop the top, pour a drink and remember the days when the Belgian Congo still existed.
There's also another type of earth globe that you may find yourself spending a lot of time looking at and playing with. These are newer magnetic globes that hover in place and look like they are floating in the sky. There is a pole at the top and bottom, and the high-powered magnets cause the globe to 'float' between them. When you pick a place to display or teach with these pieces, don't have them near a TV, speakers or your wallet and credit cards. Those high power magnets may have a detrimental effect on those items.
